Oral Surgery
- Numbness from anesthetic may last approximately two hours to
four hours.
- Bite on gauze for 30 minutes. If bleeding persists, place a
new pad, wetted, over the area. If you change the pad too often,
bleeding may be prolonged. It is normal for the saliva to be streaked
with blood for the first day. The gauze may be substituted by
a tea bag. The tannic acid in the tea has a clotting effect.
- Keep fingers and tongue away from the area.
- Swelling and discolouration is to be expected in certain areas,
usually reaching its maximum two days after surgery. It will disappear
gradually and is no cause for concern. To reduce swelling, place
an ice pack on the area (20 minutes on and 20 minutes off) for
the first day.
- Do not rinse your mouth for 24 hours. Then rinse frequently
with warm salt water. Continue rinses for several days.
- To promote healing, gently brush the area to remove plaque.
- For the first day, avoid drinking with a straw. This creates
a suction and may loosen the blood clot.
- Cold or lukewarm liquids may be taken for the first 4-6 hours.
After that, soft food is permissible.
- Avoid sports and strenuous activity for 24 hours.
- If you have any discomfort, take whatever you normally take
for a headache. If pain persists, please call the office.
- If required, sutures (stitches) are removed without discomfort
in about 5 days. An appointment will have been made for you.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call. |
